TEHRAN, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Iran has started drilling and repairing operations in an offshore oilfield on the maritime border between Iran and Saudi Arabia, an oil industry official announced on Sunday.

"Upon the installation of the first drilling rig in the Forouzan joint field after many years, drilling and repairing wells began with the goal of increasing oil production," said Alireza Salmanzadeh, Chief Executive Director of Iranian Offshore Oil Company (IOOC), as quoted by official IRNA news agency.

The newly-installed rig aims at repairing and drilling 26 wells, with an expected increase in production of 23,000 barrels per day.

The development of the field by the IOOC, Salmanzadeh said, is a highly important project of the National Iranian Oil Company, aimed at increasing the country's oil production.

The Forouzan field locates approximately 100 km southeast of Kharg island in the Gulf region and joint Marjan oilfield of Saudi Arabia. Enditem
