MOSCOW, July 13 (Xinhua) -- A Russian Su-30 fighter scrambled to escort a U.S. reconnaissance aircraft over the Black Sea, the Russian Defense Ministry said Tuesday.

"Today, the air defense units of the Southern Military District detected an air target approaching the Russian state border over the waters of the Black Sea," the ministry's Zvezda broadcasting service said in a statement.

The foreign aircraft was identified as a U.S. Air Force EP-3E Aries electronic warfare and reconnaissance aircraft, Zvezda said.

After the U.S. plane turned from the border, the fighter safely returned to its home base, it said.

The flight of the Su-30 was carried out in strict accordance with international airspace rules, and there was no violation of Russia's state border, it added. Enditem
