JAKARTA, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia on Thursday recorded 56,757 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, the highest daily spike, bringing the total tally to 2,726,803, the Health Ministry said.

The ministry also said that 982 new deaths were reported in the same period, bringing the death toll to 70,192.

Another 19,049 recovered patients were discharged from hospitals, raising the total number of recoveries to 2,176,412.

The virus has spread to all the country's 34 provinces.

Specifically, in the past 24 hours, Jakarta recorded 12,691 new cases, West Java 11,101, East Java 8,230, Central Java 4,360 and Banten 3,994.

"We estimated that (daily cases) are going to increase. We hope not to surpass 60,000," Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan told a virtual press conference on Thursday.

Pandjaitan said the government is preparing for the worst-case scenario of 60,000 to 100,000 daily cases.

The government has been imposing emergency community activity restrictions, locally known as PPKM, on the most populated island of Java and the resort island of Bali as well 15 regions outside the islands until July 20, aiming to reduce the further spread of the Delta virus variant that has been spreading quickly across the country.
