COLOMBO -- Sri Lanka's health authorities on Wednesday administered the highest number of COVID-19 vaccines in a single day with nearly 400,000 people jabbed, statistics from the Health Ministry showed here Thursday.

According to official figures, 384,763 people had been vaccinated against COVID-19 on Wednesday, out of which 338,572 people had received the first dose of Sinopharm, and 35,410 people had received the second dose of Sinopharm vaccine. (Sri Lanka-COVID-19)

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia reported 13,215 new COVID-19 infections, the highest daily spike since the outbreak, bringing the national total to 880,782, the Health Ministry said on Thursday.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press conference that 13 of the new cases are imported and 13,202 are local transmissions. (Malaysia-Pandemic)

MEHTARLAM -- Five civilians lost their lives and 12 others sustained injury as a mortar mine fired by militants slammed into a residential area in Afghanistan's eastern Laghman province on Wednesday, the provincial government said in a statement on Thursday.

"Taliban rebels fired a mortar mine late Wednesday and the device struck a residential area in Khalilabad village, killing five innocent civilians and injuring 12 others," the statement said. (Afghanistan-Security)

SEOUL -- South Korea's central bank indicated an interest rate hike Thursday, based on its positive economic outlook that offset worry about the recent COVID-19 resurgence here.
