ACCRA, July 19 (Xinhua) -- The activities of pirates and terrorists pose a threat to the security and stability of the West African sub-region, Ghana's Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said Monday.

According to him, the precarious nature of the security situation in the sub-region is a major source of worry for the Ghanaian government as that could affect the country's post-COVID-19 economic recovery efforts.

"I am sad to say that our security situation in West Africa is getting precarious. Terrorism and piracy are our biggest threats in West Africa," he told local media.

The minister disclosed that data in the possession of the government indicates that terrorist groups were gradually extending their activities south of the Sahelian region and some Ghanaians have been recruited to join them.

"There is clear evidence that the terrorists have been able to recruit some Ghanaians and that is a risk for us," he added.

The Ghanaian information minister said that even though the government has already done a lot in curbing such threats, it will continue to do more by way of recruiting more personnel and equipping them with the needed tools to stand up to the challenge.

He further indicated the government was going to engage in awareness creation to keep the populace alert so they could share information on such threats with the security agencies. Enditem
