Live COVID-19 updates: Germany's COVID-19 incidence doubles within two weeks

BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

BERLIN -- Germany's seven-day incidence of COVID-19 infections per 100,000 inhabitants has more than doubled within the past two weeks, the Robert Koch Institut (RKI) said on Tuesday.

Since July 6, the seven-day incidence in Germany rose from 4.9 to 10.9, according to the RKI, the federal government agency for disease control and prevention.

COLOMBO -- Researchers from one of Sri Lanka's leading universities, the Sri Jayewardenepura University, have found that China's Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine is highly efficient against the Delta variant which has become the dominant variant across the world.

"This vaccine was found very effective for the Delta variant as well. The antibody responses to delta variant and neutralizing antibodies were similar to levels seen following natural infection," the University said on its website on Monday.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazil has registered 1,424 more COVID-19 deaths in the past 24 hours, raising its national death toll to 544,180, the health ministry said Tuesday.

As many as 27,592 new cases were detected, taking the total caseload to 19,419,437, the ministry said.

BUENOS AIRES -- More than 70 percent of Argentines over the age of 20 have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, the health ministry said Monday.

"With a weekly application rate of around 2,300,000 doses in the last three weeks, and the nonstop arrival of vaccines, the strategic plan for vaccination against the SARS-CoV-2 virus is advancing in the different age groups," the ministry said in a statement.

ANKARA -- Turkey on Tuesday registered 8,780 new COVID-19 cases, raising its tally of infections to 5,546,166.

The death toll from the virus in Turkey rose by 46 to 50,650, while 4,561 more people recovered in the last 24 hours, said the Turkish Health Ministry.

ADDIS ABABA -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa reached 6,267,776 as of Tuesday afternoon, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.

The Africa CDC, the specialized healthcare agency of the African Union, said the death toll from the pandemic stands at 158,697 across the continent. Enditem
