GABORONE, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Botswana started vaccinating people aged between 30 and 54 against the COVID-19 from Thursday, said a source from the southern African country's Ministry of Health and Wellness.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness had previously communicated that it anticipated transiting to Phase Two of the national vaccine deployment plan in August 2021, which would cover adults aged between 30 and 54, said Christopher Nyanga, the ministry's spokesperson, in a statement released Wednesday.

As at the week ending July 16, some districts across the country were already receiving dwindling numbers of people targeted on Phase One for those aged 55 and above, said Nyanga.

"In view of this development, the ministry will on July 22, 2021 proceed to vaccinate those falling in the Phase Two category, specifically starting with those aged 45 to 54 in order to avoid congestion at vaccination centers," he said.

According to Botswana's health ministry, this category has a total of 765,754 people.

At least 173,512 of Botswana's 1.6 million adults have received one dose of the vaccine, while 111,164 are fully vaccinated, according to official figures. Enditem
