Live COVID-19 updates: Turkey reports 16,809 new cases

BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

ANKARA -- Turkey on Monday registered 16,809 new COVID-19 cases, raising its tally of infections to 5,618,417, according to its health ministry.

The death toll from the virus in Turkey rose by 63 to 50,997, while 5,585 more people recovered in the last 24 hours.

WASHINGTON -- The United States will keep existing travel restrictions from entering the country due to the surging cases of COVID-19 Delta variant, the White House said on Monday.

Driven by the rising Delta variant cases here at home, particularly among those who are unvaccinated, "we will maintain existing travel restrictions at this point," White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters at a daily briefing.

JERUSALEM -- Israel's Ministry of Health reported 2,215 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, bringing the tally of infections in the country to 862,559.

The death toll from the virus in Israel rose by one to 6,461, while the number of patients in serious condition rose from 101 to 121.

HAVANA -- Cuba on Monday reported 8,184 new COVID-19 infections and 66 more deaths in the last 24 hours, for a total of 341,152 cases and 2,417 deaths.

Director of hygiene and epidemiology of the Ministry of Public Health Francisco Duran warned, "The disease is not behaving like it did at the beginning of the pandemic in Cuba or around the world," referring to the infectious levels of the novel coronavirus variants in circulation.

KUWAIT CITY -- Kuwait decided to ease some of its COVID-19 restrictions and resume commercial activities, the Kuwaiti government announced Monday.

Tareq Al-Mezrem, the government spokesman, said at a press conference that Kuwait will resume commercial activities except for conferences, weddings, and social events, starting from Tuesday, amid a drop in COVID-19 cases. Enditem
