LONDON, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Manchester United and Real Madrid on Tuesday agreed for the English club to sign French international defender Raphael Varane for a fee in the region of 50 million euros.

Both clubs have confirmed the agreement on their official websites, which is dependent on Varane passing his medical with United.

"Manchester United is delighted to announce the club has reached agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of French international defender and World Cup winner, Raphael Varane, subject to a medical and to player terms being finalized," read a statement on the Manchester United website.

The 28-year-old leaves Madrid, who he joined from French side Lens as an 18-year-old in 2011, after making 360 appearances in all competitions and scoring 17 goals.

He becomes United's third signing of the summer after goalkeeper Tom Heaton and England international forward Jadon Sancho, although confirmation of his arrival will have to wait as he will have to quarantine before undergoing his medical at Old Trafford.

The French international is the second central defender to leave Real Madrid this summer after Sergio Ramos joined Paris Saint-Germain after his contract expired, although the club has signed David Alaba on a free transfer from Bayern Munich.

Rumors in the Spanish press suggest the club will not use Varane's transfer fee to sign a new defender, preferring instead to try to sign PSG forward Kylian Mbappe.

That means Jesus Vallejo, who has spent the past two seasons on loan at Granada, will now become fourth-choice central defender behind Alaba, Eder Militao and Nacho Fernandez, who recently extended his contract until June 2023. Enditem
