ADDIS ABABA, July 29 (Xinhua) -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa reached 6,587,734 as of Thursday afternoon, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.
The Africa CDC, the specialized healthcare agency of the African Union, said the death toll from the pandemic stands at 167,183 while 5,777,353 patients across the continent have recovered from the disease.
South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Ethiopia are the countries with the most cases in the continent, according to the Africa CDC.
South Africa has recorded the most COVID-19 cases in Africa at 2,408,525 cases while the northern African country of Morocco reported 597,876 cases as of Thursday afternoon.
The Africa CDC also revealed that at least 58,633,796 COVID-19 tests have been conducted by African countries. More than 1.3 million new tests were carried out during the past week, but the figure represented a 19 percent decrease from tests carried out in the previous week.
According to the agency, the overall positivity rate in the continent was 11.2 percent. To date, some 65 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered by African countries, according to the Africa CDC. Enditem
