HAVANA, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness congratulated Jamaican women sprinters for sweeping the medals in the 100 metres at the Tokyo Olympics.

"Our Jamaican athletes have once again shown the world that we are a global superpower in athletics," he said in a press release shared on Twitter.

"On behalf of the Government and people of Jamaica, I thank you for your commitment to the sport and to your country," he added.

It came after Elaine Thompson-Herah (10.61) won ahead of compatriots Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (10.74) and Shericka Jackson (10.76) who ran her personal best time.

Meanwhile, Jamaica's Minister of Culture, Vender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange, said that Elaine Thompson-Herah successfully defended her Olympic title, winning gold in a new Olympic record of 10.61 seconds and becoming the second fastest woman of all time.

"My tears flow for a grateful nation. Jamaica leads the world in female sprint," she was quoted as saying by Jamaica Gleaner's website.

"I'm so happy as the Minister of Sport and I'm sure all of Jamaica shares my joy. At home the pans and the pots would have sounded. Clean sweep Team Jamaica," she added.

It is the second time in Olympic history Jamaica has swept the podium places.
