LOS ANGELES, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Disney's fantasy adventure film "Jungle Cruise" was the No. 1 movie at the North American box office with a three-day estimate of 34.18 million U.S. dollars in its opening weekend, according to studio figures collected by measurement firm Comscore.

The 200-million-dollar film also took in 30 million dollars worldwide in Disney Plus Premier Access. Disney+ subscribers in the United States have the option to pay an additional, one-time 29.99 dollars fee to watch the film.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and inspired by Disney's theme park attraction of the same name, the film, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, follows a wisecracking skipper and an intrepid researcher on a quest to discover an ancient healing tree deep in the heart of the Amazon jungle.

"Jungle Cruise" has received mixed reviews from critics with an approval rating of 63 percent based on 260 reviews to date on review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. Movie audiences gave it an "A-" on CinemaScore.

At the international box office, the film brought in 27.6 million dollars from 47 markets. The film's theatrical release date in China, one of the most important markets for major Hollywood studios, has not been set.

Another newcomer, indie film studio A24's fantasy adventure "The Green Knight" opened in second place with 6.78 million dollars.

Based on the timeless Arthurian legend, "The Green Knight" tells the story of Sir Gawain, King Arthur's reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men.

The film, starring Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton and Sarita Choudhury, is directed by David Lowery.

Universal Pictures' thriller "Old" came in third with 6.76 million dollars in its second weekend, pushing its North American cume to 30.61 million dollars.

Inspired by the 2010 graphic novel Sandcastle by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters, the PG13-rated film follows a family on a tropical holiday who discover that the secluded beach where they are relaxing for a few hours is somehow causing them to age rapidly and reducing their entire lives into a single day.

Directed by M. Night Shyamalan, the film stars an impressive international cast including Golden Globe winner Gael Garcia Bernal, Vicky Krieps, Rufus Sewell, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Abbey Lee, Aaron Pierre, Alex Wolff and Chinese American actor Ken Leung. Enditem
