Live COVID-19 updates: Iran's daily COVID-19 infections hit new record

BEIJING, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

TEHRAN -- Iran registered on Monday the highest number of new COVID-19 infections detected in 24 hours, as the Iranian Health Ministry reported 37,189 new cases, taking the country's total infections to 3,940,708.

The pandemic has so far claimed 91,407 lives in Iran, up by 411 in the past 24 hours, the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education said in a briefing published on the ministry's official website.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh reported 15,989 new COVID-19 cases and 246 more deaths on Monday, making the tally at 1,280,317 and the death toll at 21,162, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.

The official data showed that 53,462 samples were tested in the last 24 hours as of 8:00 a.m. local time on Monday across Bangladesh.

LONDON -- Britain has reported another 21,952 coronavirus cases in the latest 24-hour period, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 5,902,354, according to official figures released Monday.

The country also recorded another 24 coronavirus-related deaths. The total number of coronavirus-related deaths in Britain now stands at 129,743. These figures only include the deaths of people who died within 28 days of their first positive test.

TUNIS -- A new batch of Sinovac COVID-19 vaccines and protective medical equipment donated by China arrived in Tunisia on Monday.

At the delivery ceremony at El Aouina Airport in Tunisia's capital Tunis, Chinese Ambassador to Tunisia Zhang Jianguo highlighted the successful arrival of the donated vaccines in Tunisia through the close cooperation between China and Tunisia.

WASHINGTON -- Seventy percent of U.S. adults have had at least one shot of a COVID-19 vaccine, showed data published Monday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The milestone came about a month behind President Joe Biden's Fourth of July goal.

PARIS -- Alain Fischer, coordinator of France's COVID-19 vaccination campaign, said here on Monday that the country could reach herd immunity against COVID-19 by this autumn, calling on the still reluctant segments of the French population to get vaccinated to help cope with highly transmissible Delta variant.

In an interview with RTL radio, Fisher noted that "vaccination is progressing very quickly these days," making it possible to reach herd immunity by autumn. Enditem
