BAGHDAD, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Unknown gunmen detonated two power transmission towers in the north of Iraqi capital Baghdad, the country's Ministry of Electricity said in a statement on Wednesday.
The bombs exploded in a power transmission tower on Tuesday night in the al-Nebai area, some 60 km north of Baghdad, resulting in a shortage in supplying power to a part of Salahudin province, said the statement.
Another bomb attack targeted later in the night a power transmission tower in the Tarmiyah area, some 30 km north of Baghdad, cutting off the power supply in several neighborhoods in northern Baghdad, it said.
Accompanied by the Iraqi security forces, the technical teams have rushed to the scenes to repair the towers, the statement added.
Iraq has been witnessing a chronic power shortage since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, as the country's electricity plants generate a total of 19,000 megawatts, far less than the actual demand of over 30,000 megawatts.
Earlier, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi held meetings to discuss the attacks attempting to sabotage power stations and transmission towers in several provinces of the country, and direct the army to strengthen the protection of power transmission lines. Enditem
