BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

DUBAI -- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Health and Prevention has approved the use of China's Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine for children aged between 3 and 17 years old in the UAE.

The decision was "based on the results of clinical studies, the strict assessment to approve the emergency use of the vaccine and the local evaluation that complies with the approved regulations," the UAE's state news agency WAM said Monday.

ADDIS ABABA -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa reached 6,815,341 as of Wednesday afternoon, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.

The Africa CDC, the specialized healthcare agency of the African Union, said the death toll from the pandemic stands at 172,836.

RIGA -- A vast majority of Latvians who were hospitalized with COVID-19 this June had not been vaccinated against the disease, the Latvian Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) said on Wednesday.

Citing data from the Latvian National Health Service, the CDC said that of the COVID-19 patients who were treated in hospital in June, 99.1 percent, or 729 people, were unvaccinated or had only received their first shot. Only six hospitalized patients, or 0.9 percent, were fully vaccinated.

BRUSSELS -- The European Commission announced on Wednesday it had approved a deal that allows EU member states to buy up to 200 million doses of Novavax's COVID-19 vaccine, once the European Medicines Agency (EMA) deems it safe and effective for use.

In a statement, the European Union's (EU) executive branch said that through the agreement with the U.S. pharmaceutical firm, EU countries will be able to purchase 100 million Novavax vaccine doses, with the option to purchase a further 100 million over the course of 2021, 2022, and 2023.

CHICAGO -- U.S. Midwest state of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker on Wednesday issued a new mask mandate for pre-school through higher school students and staff statewide, effective immediately.

The requirement will apply to all indoor athletic activities in schools. Masks won't be required for outdoor sports and activities, Chicago Tribune reported on Wednesday. Enditem
