Live COVID-19 updates: Brazil's COVID-19 cases surpass 20 mln

BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

SAO PAULO -- Brazil reported 40,716 new cases of COVID-19, raising its total caseload to 20,026,533, the Health Ministry said on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the national death toll rose to 559,6071 after 175 more deaths were detected.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 1,776 more cases of COVID-19 as of midnight Wednesday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 205,702.

The daily caseload was up from 1,725 in the prior day, hovering above 1,000 for 30 straight days. The daily average tally for the past week was 1,516.

NANJING -- East China's Jiangsu Province reported 40 new locally transmitted confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, the provincial health commission said Thursday.

Among them, four were registered in the provincial capital Nanjing, while 36 were registered in the city of Yangzhou.

BUENOS AIRES -- Argentina reported 13,736 new cases and 300 more deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing its total caseload up to 4,975,616 with 106,747 related deaths, the Health Ministry said on Wednesday.

During a working meeting, Health Minister Carla Vizzotti said that her country would speed up the vaccination process, and for the second dose, priority will be given to people who have been waiting the longest since receiving the first dose, those over 50 years old and those with underlying health conditions.

WASHINGTON -- The Delta variant accounts for an estimated 93.4 percent of all new COVID-19 cases in the United States during the last two weeks of July, according to figures published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday.

This number is even higher in certain parts of the country, showed the updated figures for the week ending July 31. In the Midwest including Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska, Delta variant accounts for more than 98 percent of all cases.

DUBAI -- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Health and Prevention has approved the use of China's Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine for children aged between 3 and 17 years old in the UAE.

The decision was "based on the results of clinical studies, the strict assessment to approve the emergency use of the vaccine and the local evaluation that complies with the approved regulations," the UAE's state news agency WAM said Monday. Enditem
