NAIROBI, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Kenya will strengthen collaboration with neighboring Tanzania in the health sector to revitalize action on epidemics of cross-border concerns, officials said on Friday.

Mutahi Kagwe, cabinet secretary in Kenya's Ministry of Health said that bilateral cooperation with Tanzania will boost action on both infectious and non-communicable diseases affecting communities in both countries.

"We are committed to strengthening bilateral cooperation with Tanzania to promote health of our citizens more so against a backdrop of COVID-19 pandemic," Kagwe said during a meeting with visiting Tanzanian minister for health, Dorothy Gwajima.

He said the two east African nations have kick-started discussions on enhanced pandemic surveillance and testing at border posts to ensure movement of goods and services is not interrupted.

According to Kagwe, other areas of collaboration include joint research, training and capacity development.

When Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta in May hosted his Tanzanian counterpart, Samia Suluhu Hassan, the two leaders resolved to promote cooperation in the health sector.

Key areas the two leaders agreed to strengthen collaboration included cross-border disease surveillance, vaccine research and sharing of best practices on prevention and treatment of tropical diseases. Enditem
