Myanmar extends public holiday period for one more week

YANGON, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's State Administration Council on Thursday extended the public holiday period for one more week to Aug. 22 for further prevention, control and treatment of COVID-19 infection, state-run media reported.

According to the council's separate order, the Central Bank of Myanmar and its subordinate government banks and private banks will be closed from Aug. 16 to 20.

Meanwhile, Myanmar's Central Committee on Prevention, Control and Treatment for COVID-19 also announced an extension of closure of basic education schools for another week until Aug. 22, due to the need to continuously curb the spread of COVID-19 infections.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Myanmar increased to 344,730 on Thursday after 3,430 new cases were reported in the past 24 hours, according to a release from the Ministry of Health.

A total of 215 new deaths were reported, bringing the death toll to 12,667 in the country as of Thursday, the release said.

According to the ministry's release, a total of 260,025 patients have been discharged from hospitals so far.

The Chinese Embassy in Myanmar recently donated masks, face shields, a batch of disinfectants and hand sanitizers to teachers and students of No. 12 China-Myanmar Friendship School in Mawlamyine township to help the teachers and students in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic, according to the embassy's release on Thursday.
