Live COVID-19 updates: UNICEF secures 20 mln USD to intensify fight against COVID-19 in Somalia

BEIJING -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

WELLINGTON -- The Cook Island government decided to suspend its travel bubble from New Zealand for at least 72 hours after a community case of COVID-19 was reported in Auckland on Tuesday, according to New Zealand local media Newshub.

As all New Zealand moved to alert level 4 from 23:59 p.m. Tuesday, the Cook Islands also beefed up to alert level 2.

TUNIS -- Since the start of the national vaccination campaign on March 13, a total of 1,842,302 Tunisians have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, the Tunisian health ministry announced on Tuesday.

The total number of people registered on the electronic vaccination platform Evax amounted to 5,195,043.

MOGADISHU -- The UN children's fund, UNICEF, said Tuesday it has secured 20 million U.S. dollars to combat COVID-19 and strengthen emergency services in Somalia.

UNICEF Somalia Representative Mohamed Ayoya said the new funding will enable UNICEF and its partners to reach more than one million people with COVID-19 prevention messaging; 484,000 people with health services; 83,000 children with treatment for severe acute malnutrition; and 300,000 people with emergency and sustained water, hygiene, and sanitation services.

TRIPOLI -- Libya's Ministry of Health said on Tuesday it has received 240,000 doses of the AstraZeneza COVID-19 vaccine from Malta and Greece.

The ministry said that 40,000 doses were provided by Malta, while 200,000 others by Greece.

These vaccines will be used as the second doses for those who have received the first doses of AstraZeneza vaccine, the ministry said.

SANTIAGO -- Chile reported on Tuesday 405 new COVID-19 infections in the last 24 hours, the lowest daily figure since April 2020, for a total of 1,630,330 cases, Health Minister Enrique Paris said.

In the same period, there were also 18 deaths, bringing the total to 36,438.

In a statement, the official said that the COVID-19 positivity rate was 1 percent in the Santiago Metropolitan Region, while in 13 of the country's 16 regions it was 2 percent or less. Enditem
