BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

PHNOM PENH -- Cambodia's Ministry of Health (MoH) announced on Sunday that another 163 new cases of the Delta COVID-19 variant were confirmed, bringing the total number of such cases in the Southeast Asian nation to 999.

"So far, the Delta variant has hit 23 out of the kingdom's 25 cities and provinces," the MoH said in a statement, adding that only in Kep and Kratie provinces the variant has not been found yet.

JAKARTA -- The Indonesian Health Ministry said on Sunday that the number of COVID-19 cases in the country rose by 12,408 within one day to 3,979,456, with the death toll adding by 1,030 to 126,372.

During the past 24 hours, 24,276 recovered patients were discharged from hospitals, raising the total number of recoveries from the pandemic in the Southeast Asian country to 3,546,324, the ministry said.

SUVA -- Fiji reported five new deaths and 303 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, Ministry of Health officials said.

Fiji's Permanent Secretary for Health James Fong said 185 cases are from the Western Division, 33 cases from the Central Division of Viti Levu, and 85 cases from the Eastern Division on Kadavu, the fourth largest island on the island nation.

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob on Sunday urged his country to unite against the difficulties posted by the COVID-19 pandemic in his first public speech since being appointed to the post.

In a televised speech, Ismail Sabri sought to strike a conciliatory tone, following months of political tensions that led to the resignation of his predecessor Muhyiddin Yassin.

MOSCOW -- Russia confirmed 20,564 new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, taking the nationwide tally to 6,747,087, the official monitoring and response center said Sunday.

The nationwide death toll grew by 762 to 176,044, and the number of recoveries increased by 15,414 to 6,019,466, the center said.

TOKYO -- The number of private properties for vacation rental in Japan has declined as the COVID-19 pandemic significantly lowered the travel demand, dashing hopes for more foreign visitors during the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, local media reported Sunday.

According to data released by the Japan Tourism Agency, the number of vacation rental homes and apartments registered under Japan's law on private lodging business as of July 12 has decreased to 18,578 from a peak of 21,385 in April 2020. Enditem
