TEHRAN, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- A Iranian economist calls for the new Iranian administration to take "structural reform" to deal with the country's economic woes following Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's recent vow of prioritizing economic development, a local newspaper reported.
In an editorial published by Donya-e-Eqtesad newspaper, economist Payam Nowruzi suggested the Iranian government should take steps in reforming the banking system, the budget structure, tax system, the organizations of state-own enterprises and so on.
The economist noted the country's economy has seen an annual 1.6-percent shrink for the past decade, which was caused by factors such as the oil prices crisis, the U.S. sanctions, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
To avert the last decade's continuous recession, Nowruzi insisted that it requires a "structural reform" in the new era with Raisi's government, which took office earlier this month.
Last week, Raisi said his government would do the utmost to tackle the economic problems and improve the livelihood of the people.
"Economic stability, improvement of macro (economic) indicators, recovery of people's livelihood and strengthening the business environment" are the priorities in the agenda of his government, Raisi said to the country's lawmakers in the parliament.
The president also promised to solve problems like high inflation, the devaluation of the Iranian rial, budget deficit and high government debt.
Raisi also said his government would be on high alert against corruption. Enditem
