HAVANA, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Cuba registered 83 deaths and 6,850 cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 5,067 and the number of infections to 634,161, the Ministry of Public Health reported on Saturday.

The ministry's national director of hygiene and epidemiology, Francisco Duran, said in his daily report that 41,523 Cubans with COVID-19 were currently hospitalized, the lowest number since mid-July.

The province of Cienfuegos registered 304 new cases and an incidence rate of 4,590.8 infections per 100,000 inhabitants, the highest in Cuba.

The government is looking to accelerate a mass vaccination drive against COVID-19, with 29.3 percent of the population immunized so far, and 3,288,559 people having been fully vaccinated.

The vaccination program is being carried out using the Cuban-made vaccines Abdala, Soberana-02, and Soberana Plus. Enditem
