Live COVID-19 updates: Australian epicentre state sees deadliest day with surging cases, record high deaths

BEIJING, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand reported 28 new community cases of Delta variant of COVID-19 on Friday, including 27 in the largest city Auckland and one in the capital Wellington, bringing the total number of cases in the country's community outbreak to 764.

Auckland has 747 of the community cases and the capital Wellington has 17 cases, according to the Ministry of Health.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 1,709 more cases of COVID-19 as of midnight Thursday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 257,110.

The daily caseload was down from 1,961 in the prior day, but it hovered above 1,000 for 59 straight days. The daily average tally for the past week was 1,708.

PYONGYANG -- Kim Jong Un, top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), presided over a politburo meeting on Thursday to discuss a series of key issues, including enhancing nationwide anti-coronavirus measures and farm production, state media reported Friday.

At the third enlarged meeting of the Political Bureau of the 8th Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, Kim urged all party organizations and officials to "reexamine the national epidemic prevention system and the work in this field, and conduct an intense political offensive to strain and awaken the epidemic prevention front once again," the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported.

SYDNEY -- The state of New South Wales (NSW), epicentre of Australia's current COVID outbreak, saw the deadliest day with a record high of 1,431 new local cases and 12 deaths on Friday.

The deaths included a woman in her 30s and 11 people in their 70s, 80s and 90s, which brought the state's death toll in the latest outbreak to 119.

NEW DELHI -- India's COVID-19 tally rose to 32,903,289 on Friday, as 45,352 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours across the country, showed the federal health ministry's latest data.

Besides, as many as 366 deaths due to the pandemic since Thursday morning took the total death toll to 439,895. Enditem
