NEW DELHI, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- India's total exports grew by more than 45 percent during August compared to last year, to 33.14 billion U.S. dollars, revealed the latest data released by the federal ministry of commerce and industry.

However, due to a significant increase in imports during the said month, the trade deficit widened to 13.87 billion U.S. dollars too, which is the highest in the past four months.

"India's merchandise exports in August 2021 was 33.14 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 45.17 percent over 22.83 billion U.S. dollars in August 2020, and an increase of 27.5 percent over 25.99 billion U.S. dollars in August 2019," said an official statement by the ministry.

It further said that the country's merchandise exports in April-August 2021 were 163.67 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 66.92 percent over 98.05 billion U.S. dollars in April-August 2020, and an increase of 22.93 percent over 133.14 billion U.S. dollars in April-August 2019.

Responding to the latest trade data, president of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) A. Sakthivel said that the continuous growth in exports since March this year not only augurs well for the economy as a whole but also yet again reiterates the commitment and hard work of the exporting community.

It also goes to show that exporters have continuously been giving their best in response to the Central Government's call of achieving a 400 billion U.S. dollars export target for the fiscal, added Sakthivel.

According to him, a steady recovery in global trade and the expectation of a buoyant order booking position for the coming months had led to such continuous growth in India's exports. Enditem
