Cameroon set to inaugurate biggest AFCON football stadium

YAOUNDE, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- Cameroon will inaugurate its biggest football stadium on Friday when it hosts World Cup qualifiers between Cameroon and Malawi.

The new 60,000-seat Olembe stadium, 13km north of the capital Yaounde, will host the opening match of Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Jan. 9 next year with the final in the same stadium on Feb. 6.

"It is a wonderful football stadium. We will unveil to the world this beautiful stadium during the Cameroon-Malawi match. It remains one of the best, if not the best stadium in Cameroon," the country's Minister of Sports and Physical Education Narcisse Mouelle Kombi told reporters while inspecting the stadium.

Apart from the football pitch, the sports complex of Olembe has two training stadiums, with 1,000 seats each, a gymnasium for handball, basketball, volleyball and tennis, and an Olympic swimming pool, a five-star hotel with 70 rooms, a shopping mall, a museum and a cinema.

Cameroon has already inaugurated four other stadiums in the cities of Douala, Bafoussam, Garoua and Limbe which will also stage several AFCON matches. Enditem
