LOS ANGELES, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Disney and Marvel Studios' superhero film "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" led ticket sales at the North American box office with an estimated 71.4 million U.S. dollars in its opening weekend, according to studio figures collected by measurement firm Comscore.

The theater-only release's three-day box office figure is the second best since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in North America, only behind another Marvel Studios' film "Black Widow" which opened simultaneously in theaters and on Disney Plus in July with an 80.3-million-dollar debut.

"Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" is the 25th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Marvel's first film with an Asian lead and cast.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film stars Chinese-Canadian actor Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, who must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization. The film also stars Tony Leung as Wenwu, Awkwafina as Shang-Chi's friend Katy and Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan, as well as Fala Chen, Meng'er Zhang, Florian Munteanu and Ronny Chieng.

The film has received largely positive reviews with an approval rating of 92 percent based on 238 reviews to date on review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. Movie audiences gave it an "A" on CinemaScore.

Universal Pictures and Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures' horror hit "Candyman" came in second with 10.55 million dollars in its second weekend for a North American cume of 39.06 million dollars.

Directed by Nia DaCosta, "Candyman" is based on the 1992 film of the same name, written by Bernard Rose, and the short story "The Forbidden" by Clive Barker. The film stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett and Colman Domingo.

The film follows visual artist Anthony McCoy and his girlfriend as they move into a condo in Chicago's Cabrini-Green neighborhood, which was terrorized by a word-of-mouth ghost story about a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, easily summoned by those daring to repeat his name five times into a mirror.

Landing in third, Disney and 20th Century Studios' sci-fi action comedy film "Free Guy" took in 8.71 million dollars in its fourth weekend, pushing its North American total to 91.89 million dollars.

Directed by Shawn Levy, the film stars Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Lil Rel Howery, Joe Keery, Utkarsh Ambudkar and Taika Waititi. The film follows a bank teller who discovers he is actually a background player in an open-world video game, and decides to become the hero of his own story. Now in a world where there are no limits, he is determined to be the guy who saves his world his way before it is too late.

In the fourth place, Paramount Pictures' animated film "PAW Patrol: The Movie" earned 4 million dollars in its third weekend. The film has grossed 30.32 million dollars in North America to date.

Based on the popular children's television series "PAW Patrol," the film follows a young boy who serves as the leader of the PAW Patrol and the pups who are called to Adventure City to save it from an evil mayor.

The film is directed by Canadian filmmaker Cal Brunker and the star-studded voice cast includes Iain Armitage, Marsai Martin, Ron Pardo, Yara Shahidi, Kim Kardashian, Randall Park, Dax Shepard, Tyler Perry, Jimmy Kimmel and Will Brisbin.

Disney's fantasy adventure film "Jungle Cruise" finished fifth with 3.95 million dollars in its sixth weekend for a North American total of 105.64 million dollars.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and inspired by Disney's theme park attraction of the same name, the 200-million-dollar film, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, follows a wisecracking skipper and an intrepid researcher on a quest to discover an ancient healing tree deep in the heart of the Amazon jungle.
