ASUNCION, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Veteran striker Oscar Cardozo has been recalled to Paraguay's squad for the team's home World Cup qualifier against Venezuela, the South American country's football association said on Tuesday.

The 38-year-old replaces Torino forward Antonio Sanabria, who has returned to Italy for the birth of his child, according to a post on the official Twitter account of Paraguay's national team on Tuesday.

Cardozo, who has been capped 54 times for Paraguay, has not worn the Guaranies shirt since the 2019 Copa America in Brazil.

He has scored 11 goals in 28 matches across all competitions for Paraguayan top-flight side Libertad this year.

Both Paraguay and Venezuela will be looking to end extended periods without a victory in the South American qualifying tournament when they meet at Defensores del Chaco stadium in Asuncion on Thursday.

Paraguay's only victory so far came in October last year, when they beat Venezuela 2-0 in Caracas. The Vinotinto have also won just one match, having overcome Chile 2-1 at home last November.

The Guaranies are currently sixth in the 10-team South American qualifying group with one win, five draws and two losses so far. Venezuela are last with four points from eight games. Enditem
