SUVA, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Fiji's Ministry of Health and Medical Services reported 146 new cases of COVID-19 and one more death on Wednesday, as the country prepares to vaccinate children between 15 and 17 years old.

Out of the new cases, 69 are from the Western Division, 68 from the Central Division of Viti Levu and nine from Kadavu, Permanent secretary for Health James Fong said.

There have been 217 new recoveries since the last update, and the number of active cases in Fiji is 12,870.

As many as 49,320 cases have been recorded during the latest outbreak that started in April this year, while a total of 49,390 cases were detected since March 2020, with 35,605 recoveries and 540 deaths.

Fong said currently 119 COVID-19 patients were admitted to hospitals with five in severe condition and four in critical condition.

Meanwhile, 577,005 adults in Fiji have received their first doses of the vaccine and 363,420 have received their second doses.

This means that 97.5 percent of the target population have received at least one dose and 61.9 percent are now fully vaccinated nationwide.

Fong said the Ministry of Health and Medical Services is ready to begin the vaccination of children between 15 to 17 years old.

A stringent process is in place to ensure that parental or guardian consent is secured and online registration is encouraged before vaccination, said the official.

The Health Ministry has set aside the required number of vials of vaccine to ensure that the target population between 15 to 17 can receive both doses.

The rollout of the first dose of vaccine for the eligible children is scheduled to start on Sept. 20 and the second dose in October. Enditem
