COLOMBO, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's Hambantota International Port (HIP) has said in a statement on Wednesday that it is operationalizing a concept called "HIP Speed" to boost efficiency and momentum for all stakeholders.

"We put this formula in place taking into consideration the opportunities that will emerge in the coming year when supply and demand structures will change and trade routes will be reinvented," Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG) CEO Johnson Liu said.

"The Hambantota Port is well placed on the global maritime map for growth and investment, and this formula is to strengthen processes and infrastructure to capitalize on future opportunities."

The "HIP Speed" concept is modeled on Liu's experience working in other facilities managed by China Merchants Port Holdings (CMPort), which is a parent company of HIPG.

The concept includes a "One Stop Service" facility with representatives from Sri Lanka's Board of Investment (BOI) and Customs to assist investors in acquiring certification and approvals.

"While we looked at overseas models for benchmarking and maximizing our operational efficiency, we were guided mainly by the global standards and procedures of CMPort, which operates more than 50 ports and terminals all over the world," HIPG Chief Operating Officer Tissa Wickramasinghe said.

HIPG has partnered with Shenzhen Xinji group to set up a plug-and-play "Park in park" manufacturing facility as an example of the "HIP Speed".

Promotion of the HIP industrial park has accelerated with agreements signed with more than 30 investors from Singapore, Japan, Sri Lanka, China, and now the Maldives.

HIPG also said that its vision is to develop HIP as an energy hub in South Asia. The company has partnered with Sinopec Fuel Oil Lanka Limited to provide bunkering services.

HIP's cargo volume increased 186 percent year on year in the first half of 2021. The port's total throughput increased to 1,206,425 MT at the end of June 2021, compared to 420,421 MT for the same period in 2020. Enditem
