LAGOS, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Two civilians were killed on Thursday after they were caught up in a crossfire between police personnel and gunmen on a road in northwest Nigeria's Kaduna state, the police said.
At a news conference in the state capital Kaduna city on Thursday, Mohammed Jalige, the police spokesperson in the state, said the incident occurred along the Kaduna-Abuja expressway linking the northern state to Abuja, Nigeria's capital city, during a foiled banditry attack.
"The police command received a distress call at about 5:45 am that some bandits had blocked the Kaduna-Abuja highway close to a bridge along Kasarami village and were shooting at motorists," Jalige said.
Police operatives responded swiftly and engaged the bandits in a fierce gun duel, which resulted in the death of one bandit, while others scampered into the forest with varying degrees of gun wounds, according to the spokesperson. A driver and his conductor of a commercial vehicle were caught up in the crossfire and both lost their lives. Enditem
