BERLIN, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Former top-scorers in football might have to fear losing their goal records after a curious decision in German football.

Players, coaches, and fans in modern times seem to slowly get used to interruptions. It takes up to five minutes as disputed actions can be reviewed and decisions can be revised based on new facts delivered by video clips, the so-called Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.

The VAR has to some extent changed modern football's coordinate system as cheers might have to wait until the referees approve a goal.

Neither fans, coaches nor players seem to be overwhelmingly happy sometimes having to wait for that long.

The German football league now has surprisingly set a new mark, canceling a goal scored in July 1979, after 42 years.

In order to investigate details in the race for the second division all-time top scorer, league officials observed older clips of a regional TV station of the game between Hannover 96 - OSC Bremerhaven (4-2).

The association claims the steps were necessary to find out when Schalke's striker Simon Terodde might get near the reigning record-holder Dieter Schatzschneider.

33-year-old Terodde meanwhile scored 149 goals in the second division, while 63-year-old Schatzschneider was rated at 154 over decades, dropping back to 153 after the unusual review.

After the video investigation came to light, a defender had scored an own goal. It wasn't Schatzschneider responsible for the 1-0 lead.

At least when it comes to the perspective of the association.

"That's ridiculous," Schatzschneider stated. The former striker asked, "Don't they have other problems?"

The former Hannover striker made clear. Terodde is deservedly on his way to conquer the top-scorer crown "before the end of the year."

"He is a fine man and footballer, deserving to grab the crown of the all-time-scorer," he said, adding "I am just surprised as I thought German football has some other issues to solve."

While some complain about the newly used tool destroying football's pure soul, supporters claim the sports restored an entirely fair competition.

No matter how fans see the VAR, canceling a goal after 42 years might cause new discussions among supporters and goal-hunters. Enditem
