BAGHDAD, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Iraq launched an associated petroleum gas processing project with the U.S. Baker Hughes company at two oil fields in the country's southern province of Dhi Qar, the Iraqi Ministry of Oil said in a statement on Sunday.

The project at the Nasiriyah and al-Gharraf oil fields is part of the ministry's plan "to stop gas flaring in the coming years, and increase clean energy production," Iraqi Oil Minister Ihsan Abdul-Jabbar Ismail said.

"Baker Hughes began the preparations for the design and construction of this project from early this year, which includes building an integrated plant to process 200 million cubic feet of associated gas from the Nasiriyah and al-Gharraf fields," Deputy Minister of Oil Karim Hattab was quoted as saying.

This project will contribute to boosting the national production of gas, as well as providing jobs for individuals and local contracting companies, according to the statement.

Iraq holds 132 trillion cubic feet of proven natural gas reserves, and is keen to invest in the associated gas to meet the country's needs.

Iraq's economy relies heavily on the export of crude oil, which brings in more than 90 percent of the country's revenues. Enditem
