UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations has released 8.5 million U.S. dollars in emergency aid for Niger to face internal displacement, floods and cholera, UN humanitarians said on Tuesday.

UN Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths authorized the Central Emergency Response Fund allocation on Monday to help provide healthcare, water and sanitation hygiene, shelter, non-food items, protection and education support to more than 720,000 people.

"This includes rapid assistance to over 81,600 vulnerable people, including newly displaced, returnees and members of host communities in the regions of Diffa, Maradi, Tahoua and Tillaberi," the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.

Niger has more than 4,600 cases of cholera, including 149 deaths, among flooding-affected nearly 200,000 people, the office said.

The International Organization for Migration, the World Health Organization, the UN Refugee Agency and the UN Children's Fund and their partners will implement the projects, OCHA said. Enditem
