LAGOS, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- South Africa's female national football team Banyana Banyana on Tuesday night emerged champions of the maiden edition of the Aisha Buhari Invitational Women's Tournament after defeating the Super Falcons of Nigeria 4-2 in the last game.

The match played at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena at Lagos saw the top two teams in women's football on the African continent at the moment face off in what was an explosive battle.

To reach the last encounter against the South Africans in Tuesday's game, the Super Falcons defeated the Female Eagles of Mali 2-0. Both goals came from substitute Gift Monday late in the second half of the opening fixture.

South Africa's Banyana Banyana came into the clash on the back of a 3-0 win over Ghana in their opening encounter.

South Africa took the lead in the 6th minute through an own goal after Nigeria's Alozie Chidi sent the ball into her own net in an attempt to clear a cross by South Africa's Hildah Magaia. In the 19th minute, the South Africans doubled their lead from the penalty spot following a handball by Nigeria's defender Onome Ebi.

South Africans got their third off a header in the last minute of the first half.

The Super Falcons got a goal back immediately after the restart. In the 52nd minute, the Super Falcons captain Asisat Oshoala scored another with a fantastic curling effort from outside the box after she dispossessed a South African defender.

But it was the South Africans who had the laugh as they extended their lead on 86 minutes. A penalty kick from a foul by Nigerians inside the box gave South Africa a 4-2 win.

The six-team invitational tournament, named after Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari's wife, featured Nigeria, Ghana, Mali, South Africa, Cameroon, and Morocco. It kicked off on September 15 and ended on Tuesday. Enditem
