BUCHAREST, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- A webinar was organized by local think tanks here on Friday to mark the 50th anniversary of the restoration of the lawful seat of the People's Republic of China in the United Nations (UN).

The lively online event brought together academics, researchers, former ministers and diplomats from across Romania.

In a speech, the Chinese Ambassador to Romania Jiang Yu expressed her deep respect for all those Romanian politicians and diplomats who contributed to the restoration of China's legitimate place in the UN, emphasizing that China will never forget Romania's support.

"Over the past half a century, China has played an active role in the work of the UN Security Council ... becoming the second-largest contributor to the UN peacekeeping budget and the largest peacekeeping troop contributing country among the permanent members of the UN Security Council," the ambassador told the webinar organized by the EURISC Foundation and Middle East Political and Economic Institute.

According to Jiang, China has conducted many development projects and aid programs in more than 160 developing countries; It has implemented the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement, establishing the goals on carbon emissions. The country is actively involved in the global anti-COVID-19 efforts and has made the Chinese vaccine a public good.

The ambassador said that China will always support the basic role of the UN in international affairs, defend multilateralism, cooperate with all countries to maintain global peace and stability, and promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. For this end, she called on China and Romania to continue to cooperate in the spirit of genuine friendship, understanding and support, based on mutual respect.

Teodor Melescanu, former president of the Romanian Senate and three-times foreign minister, said he highly appreciated the Belt and Road Initiative, pointing out that China is the only country that is committed to narrowing the development gap and achieving common development in the world.

Adrian Severin, Romania's foreign minister in 1990s, stressed that today's world cannot ensure peace, stability and solidarity without China.

He then talked about the One China principle, stressing that Taiwan is part of China.

"To make Taiwan a topic for international conflict is a proof of lack of experience and wisdom. It is the Chinese people and not foreign powers who decide ... Romanian diplomats contributed 50 years ago to China's recognition on the global stage and today's diplomats should do the same," Severin said.

Viorel Isticioaia Budura, Romania's former ambassador to China, who pointed to China's role as the first country that signed the UN Charter, said the entire evolution of China within the UN has been synchronous with its development.

Several participants in the webinar agreed that China is one of the strongest pillars of global security, its vision is to use multilateralism for global economic prosperity, not geopolitical power, and it remains the only country whose globalizing vision conceived the Belt and Road Initiative, which allows all countries -- small, under development or advanced -- to participate in it and enjoy its benefits.
