UNITED NATIONS -- A Chinese envoy on Tuesday called on Syrian parties and the international community to create favorable conditions for progress in Syria's political process.

An early end to the 10-year-old Syrian crisis is the shared aspirations of the international community and the Syrian people. The ongoing violence, terrorism, and suffering of the people highlight the necessity and urgency of a political solution, said Geng Shuang, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations. BUDAPEST -- Hungary's Parliament on Tuesday extended the COVID-19 pandemic-related state of emergency until Jan. 1, 2022.

"The extension is necessary because of the still present epidemic. The delta virus mutant is spreading in Hungary, and the successful defense and the ability to act quickly must be maintained," the government said on its official website dedicated to the pandemic. (Hungary-COVID-19)

QUITO, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- At least 24 inmates were killed and another 48 were injured in clashes Tuesday at the Litoral Penitentiary located in the coastal city of Guayaquil, in southwestern Ecuador, authorities and the National Police said.

Speaking to local media, Pablo Arosemena, the governor of the province of Guayas, whose capital is Guayaquil, confirmed the number of victims in Tuesday morning's melee in different parts of the prison. (Ecuador-Prison Riot)

LAGOS -- Nigerian police said 42 members of the proscribed Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) were arrested during a violent protest in Abuja, the capital of the country on Tuesday.

The members, according to Josephine Adeh, a spokesperson for the police in Abuja, came from northern states of Niger, Bauchi, Gombe, Borno and Kaduna to "cause mayhem" in Abuja. (Nigeria-Security-Group)

TEHRAN -- Iran on Tuesday reported 11,701 new COVID-19 cases, taking the country's total infections to 5,559,691.
