LOS ANGELES, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- The latest James Bond film "No Time to Die" led ticket sales at the North American box office with an estimated 56 million U.S. dollars in its opening weekend, according to studio figures collected by measurement firm Comscore.

After multiple delays due to the ongoing pandemic, the long-awaited Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and United Artists Releasing's blockbuster finally hit North American theatres. Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, the 25th installment in the Bond franchise is Daniel Craig's fifth and final film in the role of the British spy.

The film, with a reported budget of over 250 million dollars, also stars Rami Malek, Lea Seydoux, Lashana Lynch, Ben Whishaw and Naomie Harris among others.

In this film, Bond's new mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading him onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.

The film holds an approval rating of 84 percent based on 292 reviews from critics to date on review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. Movie audiences gave it an "A-" on CinemaScore.

Overseas, "No Time to Die" has earned 257 million dollars since its international release two weeks ago for a global total of 313 million dollars. The film is set to open in China on Oct. 29.

Sony's presentation of Columbia Pictures' superhero film "Venom: Let There Be Carnage" moved to second place in its second weekend with 32 million dollars for a North American total of 141.6 million dollars.

Produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel and China's Tencent Pictures, the theater-only release is the sequel to 2018 blockbuster "Venom." Directed by Andy Serkis, the film stars Tom Hardy who returns to the big screen as the lethal protector Venom, one of Marvel's greatest and most complex characters.

In third place, United Artists Releasing's presentation of Metro Goldwyn Mayer's "The Addams Family 2" took in 10.01 million dollars this weekend. The film has garnered 31.14 million dollars after 10 days in North America.

Directed by Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon, the favorite spooky family is back in the animated comedy sequel. Morticia and Gomez become distraught that their children are growing up, skipping family dinners, and totally consumed with "scream time" in the sequel to the 2019 animated film, "The Addams Family."

Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Snoop Dogg and Chloe Grace Moretz reprise their voice roles in the new film. Enditem
