Television remains Filipinos' main source for political news: survey

MANILA, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Television remains the most common source of political news for Filipinos while newspaper is the choice of only 3 percent of people, according to an independent poll released on Tuesday.

A national survey by Pulse Asia conducted from September 6 to 11 showed that 91 percent of 2,400 polled adult Filipinos aged 18 and above said that TV is their leading source of political news.

The survey also showed that radio is the news source of 49 percent of Filipino adults. In comparison, 48 percent said they obtain their news about the Philippine government and politics from the Internet, particularly Facebook.

The survey also showed that 37 percent of the respondents cited friends or relatives as their news source, while 25 percent mentioned friends or acquaintances. Only 3 percent of the respondents cited the newspaper as a source of political information.

Meanwhile, the survey showed that only 63 percent of the respondents use or access the Internet.

"Practically 99 percent of Internet users go online to check their social media accounts," the survey said, adding that Facebook and YouTube are the most popular among Internet users.

The survey also showed that ownership of a Facebook account reaches 99 percent among Internet users in the Philippines, while 57 percent of Internet users have a YouTube account, 17 percent are registered on TikTok, 14 percent own an Instagram account, and 8 percent are on Twitter.

The survey showed that Facebook's messaging platform Messenger is the most used messaging application in the country (98 percent), followed by Viber (5 percent), WhatsApp (2 percent), Telegram (2 percent) and WeChat (1 percent). Enditem
