WASHINGTON, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- The United States must engage seriously with its own genocidal history of colonization, said a recent article in Foreign Policy magazine.

The country was "not just morally, but also legally responsible for the crime of genocide against its own people," said the article published Monday.

Before 1978, the United States was in violation of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, an international treaty unanimously adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948, with the United States being one of the 39 signatories, it noted.

"Over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, there were more than 350 government funded, and often church run, Indigenous boarding schools across the United States," which hundreds of thousands of Indigenous children passed through, or died in, it said.

However, getting the American people to engage with their past in honesty is "a politically fraught task," as nearly all calls for an objective examination are challenged "most vituperatively by conservatives who prefer the illusion of American perfection to the reality of a country that has often fallen far short of its ideals," the article said.

Until this "long and dark history" of the United States "is properly excavated, reflected upon in the public political discourse, and internalized by the general public, Native American citizens will remain marginalized and oppressed," it added. Enditem
