SOFIA, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Eight illegal immigrants were injured when a van, driven by a drugged driver, crashed in Bulgaria on Wednesday evening, the Ministry of Interior said Thursday.

The vehicle that carried 34 foreign citizens without identity documents went off the road and crashed into bushes between the villages of Veselie and Yasna polyana, some 60 km north of the border with Turkey, the ministry said in a press release.

The injured passengers received abrasions and bruises without danger to life, it said. They were transported to a hospital for examination, and one was hospitalized.

The foreigners said they were from Afghanistan, the ministry said.

Meanwhile, the ministry said that the driver, a 48-year-old Bulgarian citizen, tested positive for amphetamines, and did not have a driver's license.

He and the passengers were detained, the ministry said, adding that an investigation is underway.

According to official data, during the first eight months of 2021, Bulgarian law enforcement authorities arrested 765 immigrants trying to illegally enter the country and 1,143 trying to leave it. Enditem
