BOGOTA, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- At least six people were killed and more than a score injured after a bus plunged into a ravine about 150 meters deep in rural Chaparral, a town in central Colombia's Tolima department, Civil Defense confirmed Thursday.

The director of Civil Defense in Tolima, Major Luis Fernando Velez, said Wednesday's crash occurred in a remote mountain region that made it difficult to reach the site and the victims.

The vehicle "tumbled into a ravine in a high mountainous area that is difficult to access," said Velez.

"We have confirmed six deaths and 24 wounded with bruises and fractures on their bodies," he added.

The driver reportedly lost control of the bus and veered off the road, according to the official.

Local authorities said the injured were taken to hospitals in Chaparral and the neighboring city of Ibague, Tolima's capital, where four of the injured were in critical condition. Enditem
