TEHRAN, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Iran's foreign ministry condemned on Friday the gun shooting at protesters in Lebanon's Beirut and called for calm after the violence left six people killed and more than 30 others wounded on Thursday.

Armed clashes erupted in Beirut's southern suburb of Tayouneh when shots were fired during a planned protest by supporters of Hezbollah and the Amal Movement against Judge Tarek Bitar who is investigating last year's Beirut port explosions.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh voiced Iran's "deep regret" over the shooting of "innocent Lebanese people who were demonstrating peacefully," official news agency IRNA reported.

Khatibzadeh stressed the need of maintaining "stability and peace" in Lebanon, and expressed confidence that "the Lebanese people, government, and army, along with the Lebanese resistance" will overcome "seditions and conspiracies."

The Lebanese army announced on Thursday that it had arrested nine people suspected of involvement in the armed clashes. Enditem
