Iran reports 11,396 new COVID-19 cases, 5,784,815 in total

TEHRAN, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Iran reported on Sunday 11,396 new COVID-19 cases, taking the country's total infections to 5,784,815.

The pandemic has claimed 124,075 lives in the country so far, after 199 new deaths were registered in the past 24 hours, according to an official briefing published on the Iranian health ministry's official website.

A total of 5,324,108 people have recovered from the disease or been discharged from hospitals across the country, while 4,769 remain in intensive care units, the ministry said.

By Sunday, 48,474,187 Iranians have received their first doses of COVID-19 vaccines, and 24,169,335 of them have taken two jabs.

The official report added that 34,008,636 tests have so far been carried out across the country.

Hassan Abolghassemi, an official from Iran's national headquarters fighting COVID-19, said on Sunday that all six domestic vaccine projects that were launched in Iran in recent months "were good," and the country needed to cover a vaccine demand for 150 million doses a year. Enditem
