KIGALI, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Rwandan law enforcement forces unintentionally crossed a few meters into the territory of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) while pursuing the smugglers who were carrying unidentified packages and believed to have been armed, Rwanda Defense Force (RDF) said in a statement on Tuesday.

Rwanda security forces pursued smugglers who crossed the Rwanda-DRC border at Hehu Cell, Bugeshi Sector, Rubavu District, said the statement.

The RDF and DRC's armed forces (FARDC) maintain good relations and continue to collaborate on security matters, it added.

The statement follows an accusation by FARDC that the Rwandan forces illegally invaded six villages in northeastern DRC on Monday morning.

Exchanges of fire took place between the FARDC and elements of the RDF, according to North Kivu FARDC spokesman Guillaume Njike. Enditem
