BEIJING, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

GENEVA -- The World Health Organization (WHO) has urged countries to prioritize vaccination for health workers in the light of its new paper estimating that 115,000 died from coronavirus between January 2020 and May 2021.
Although data from 119 countries suggests that on average two in five health workers globally are fully vaccinated, there are nonetheless huge differences across regions and economic groups, said WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at a press briefing on Thursday.

WASHINGTON -- Advisers to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) met on Thursday to evaluate booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccines made by Moderna and Johnson & Johnson, and "mix and match" booster dose for currently available approved COVID-19 vaccines.
The meeting of the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices came a day after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized boosters of the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines, as well as the "mix and match" regimen.

JERUSALEM -- Israel would be reopened next month to tourists fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to a plan jointly drafted by Prime Minister Naftali Bennett's office and tourism and health ministries.
Under the plan, individual tourists who are fully inoculated with vaccines produced by Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, Sinovac, and Sinopharm may enter Israel starting from Nov. 1, the prime minister's office said in a statement.

THE HAGUE -- The number of new COVID-cases 19 in the Netherlands exceeded 5,000 between Wednesday and Thursday, the largest single daily total in three months, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) said on Thursday.
The RIVM reported 5,223 new coronavirus infections, compared to 4,602 positive tests in the 24 hours from Tuesday to Wednesday. Seven people died from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, compared to four reported deaths a day earlier.

ANKARA -- Turkey on Thursday confirmed 28,465 new COVID-19 cases, raising its total tally of infections to 7,772,604, according to its health ministry.
The death toll from the virus in Turkey rose by 198 to 68,472, while 29,160 more people recovered in the last 24 hours.

ADDIS ABABA -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa reached 8,450,464 as of Thursday afternoon, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.
The Africa CDC, the specialized healthcare agency of the African Union, said the death toll from the pandemic across the continent stands at 216,264. Enditem
