SEOUL, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- South Korea will donate COVID-19 vaccines to Iran in a humanitarian effort to help the Middle East country tackle its vaccine shortage, the South Korean foreign ministry said Monday.

One million doses of AstraZeneca vaccines are scheduled to arrive in Iran on Wednesday as South Korea saw Tehran being placed under a serious humanitarian crisis, caused by the shortage of COVID-19 vaccines, the Seoul ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said the vaccine donation would symbolize the friendly relations for the past six decades between the two countries, noting that South Korea has joined the global efforts to address the pandemic through the donation of COVID-19 vaccines.

South Korea provided 1.1 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccines for Vietnam and 470,000 doses of the vaccines for Thailand earlier this month.

The donations came as South Korea's full vaccination rate surpassed 70 percent of the total population, which is regarded by the Seoul government as a key precondition to ease antivirus measures. Enditem
