UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations is extremely concerned about the continued escalation of hostilities and violence in the northern part of the country, including Thursday's airstrikes in Tigray, said UN humanitarians.

Two airstrikes were reportedly carried out in a residential area in Mekelle, Tigray's capital. According to initial reports, six people were killed and 22 others injured. A number of houses were destroyed or severely damaged, said the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Last week, airstrikes in and around Mekelle killed at least three people and injured many others.

The world body is also alarmed by the ongoing hostilities in Afar and Amhara regions that border Tigray. The violence causes large-scale displacement, livelihood disruptions, food insecurity, and prevents the delivery of humanitarian assistance to hundreds of thousands of people in both regions, said OCHA.

The escalation of hostilities risks worsening the already dire humanitarian situation in Tigray, Amhara and Afar, where millions of people need urgent life-saving humanitarian assistance, it said.

The United Nations urgently calls on all parties to the conflict to protect civilians, civilian infrastructure and to meet their obligations under international humanitarian law, it said. Enditem
