SUVA, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- A revised literacy and numeracy curriculum for primary schools in Fiji will be rolled out next year after the Education Ministry noticed a drop in student performance.

Education Minister Premila Kumar said the new curriculum will also take into account factors, such as the loss of teaching and learning due to COVID-19, the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation reported on Wednesday.

She said this will help teachers move away from traditional styles of teaching from year one to year eight, and the skills of teachers will also be developed.

Kumar said the new syllabus is designed to make learning easier and more engaging for primary school students in more of a discovery approach where critical thinking will be applied.

Permanent Secretary for Education Anjeela Jokhan said the success of the new curriculum depends on how it is taught.

The ministry will be talking to teacher in training institutions to incorporate the revised material so that graduates are well versed when they begin teaching.

Data released showed that a lot of students in year five and seven are in the critical and basic level when it comes to literacy and numeracy, which is a worrying trend, according to the assessment. Enditem
