BEIJING, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

PARIS/BRUSSELS -- French Prime Minister Jean Castex has tested positive for COVID-19, French media reported on Monday.

Returning from Brussels Monday afternoon after meeting with his Belgian counterpart Alexander De Croo, Castex learnt that one of his daughters tested positive for COVID-19, Le Figaro reported.

WASHINGTON -- The seven-day average of reported COVID-19 infections in the United States has increased by 18 percent, said U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky on Monday.

The latest seven-day average of cases is 92,800 per day, an 18 percent surge from last week and hospitalization rates have increased 6 percent with a daily average of 5,600, Walensky said at a White House briefing.

SANTIAGO -- Chile has applied more than 40 million vaccine doses against COVID-19, Health Minister Enrique Paris said Monday.

"As of yesterday (Sunday), the 'I get vaccinated' vaccination campaign has succeeded in administering more than 40 million doses of vaccines," Paris said at a press conference.

KIEV -- The latest COVID-19 wave in Ukraine is showing signs of slowing down, the government's press service said on Monday.

"There is a positive trend in Ukraine towards a reduction in the number of new cases of COVID-19 and the number of hospitalized citizens," said a statement on the government website.

LONDON -- Britain registered 44,917 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 9,889,926, according to official figures released Monday.

The country also reported a further 45 coronavirus-related deaths. The total number of coronavirus-related deaths in Britain now stands at 143,972, with 8,024 COVID-19 patients still in hospital.

ADDIS ABABA -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa reached 8,582,983 as of Monday afternoon, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.

The Africa CDC, the specialized healthcare agency of the African Union (AU), said the death toll from the pandemic across the continent stands at 221,721. Enditem
