DAR ES SALAAM, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- A newly installed state-of-the-art radar will enhance security and operations of aircraft at Tanzania's northern Mwanza airport located on the shores of Lake Victoria, boosting fish exports, an official said on Wednesday.

Hamza Johari, the director general of the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA), said he was optimistic that the radar coupled with the presence of a modern cold room facility will boost the exports of fish products to European markets.

Addressing the 50th National Air Transport Facilitation Committee in the Mwanza city, Johari said for quite some time Tanzania exported fish products from Lake Victoria to Europe through airports in Kenya and Uganda for lack of aviation security at the Mwanza airport.

"Planes are now assured of one hundred percent security at the Mwanza airport following the installation of the ultra-modern radar," said the official.

In May 2020, Ethiopian Airlines made its maiden flight from Mwanza city, ferrying 17,262 kilograms of processed fish from Lake Victoria to European markets.

The consignment of fish worth about 83,000 U.S. dollars was ferried to markets including Belgium, Germany, France and Portugal. Enditem
